Have you ever asked yourself what to do when you’re bored? Really, the first point is that you needn’t be bored. If you’re getting bored, you need to find more passion and interests in your life.
What to Do When You’re Bored?
Okay so here are some suggestions for what to do when you’re bored. I promise you, if you start doing some of these things – the ones that resonate with you – you’ll never find time to be bored again! There aren’t enough hours in the day!
Do a drawing.
Can’t draw? That’s the point. This is for anyone who thinks they aren’t artistic. Maybe you think you can’t draw a stick man. Well, I’ve got news for you – you CAN draw! Get a large piece of paper and choose a photo that you’d like to draw.
Turn the photo upside down. Lay it on the table and look at it only from the upside down perspective. Transfer what you see onto your sketch paper, bit by bit, methodically from left to right, up to down or from the middle out. Focus on the angles, the shadows, the relationship between one line and the other.
Don’t try to copy a likeness of anything, just see the puzzle and shade it onto your blank piece of paper. Keep on, get absorbed in what you can see in the sketching. Allow yourself to be in the moment with the activity, with no goals, no expectations, just doing. When you’ve had enough or feel like you need a break, turn your sketch the right way up. You’ll be surprised how good it is. I promise! The reason for this is that people think a mouth is a certain shape so they try to draw that. When you take away that expectation you’re left with just noticing the patterns without the representation and the results are much better.
If you enjoyed making your first drawing, get yourself a great big sketchbook and do several, whenever you you have spare time on your hands. It’s a great way to disconnect and you’ll be surprised how quickly you start drawing differently, and better, using this technique.
Learn a new language.
Now, this isn’t for everyone, that’s for sure. But if the idea attracts you, learning a language is a great thing to do. You can go online and find sites that teach the language of your choice, join communities, read books, meet other language students and come out speaking another language! Remember to use positive attitude so that you’re building on your progress, not worrying about the bits you haven’t learnt yet.
Go for a walk.
Nothing new here, except the surprise that walking can be sooo wonderful. I’ve already written a post about my new found love of walking, so I won’t repeat myself. You can read it here if you’re interested.
Walking can become a fixture in your life. If you start don’t be surprised when you get addicted!
Take up an instrument.
It’s such a great thing to be able to sit down and play some music when you’re at a loose end. How could you ever get bored if you have an instrument to play! I think the piano’s the easiest instrument to learn because you can see all the notes! But the guitar’s so cool because you can take it with you and play along with people singing. And with the guitar, you can learn a few chords and start making music pretty fast. The most important thing is that you enjoy it!
Go into the kitchen and make a delicious meal for later. Prepare a yummy (in my case vegan) lasagne, casserole, pasta sauce, curry, soup or whatever you fancy. An hour in the kitchen is rewarding and satisfying and you can disconnect from your day.
And the plus is your dinner will be waiting for you!
Do a yoga session.
Yoga’s another one of my passions, even though I don’t actually do so much yoga, it’s an essential part of my life.
You can learn yoga on your own at home so it’s a great thing to do if you’re ever wondering what to do when you’re bored.
Meditation means something different to everyone you speak to, and there are loads of different ways of meditating but the simplest method is to just sit quietly in a comfy spot where you won’t get interrupted. Place your palms together or you thumb and index fingers, close your eyes and breathe in and out deeply and slowly. Listen to your breathing and still the voice in your chatter-mind. Allow your inner vision to flow. If your mind starts chattering again, bring your focus back to your breathing. You’ll be surprised how refreshed you’ll feel when you incorporate meditation into your life.
Write a diary or a novel or a blog. Any form of writing is great if you’re wondering what to do when you get bored. If you’d like to write a blog the great thing is you can also learn how to build a website and monetise your blog. Then you’ll really never have time to get bored. Never, ever, ever!!
If you haven’t discovered the joy of reading you have to give it a go. Reading can take you away to a different world, make you inspired, forget about your problems and totally immerse you. Maybe you’ve never really found the right genre to grab you. If so, do the research to find the right book, and then read to your heart’s content.
If you have animals, you won’t get bored because you can always go out and just BE with them 🙂
Conclusion – What to Do When You’re Bored
With these activities in your life, you’ll never again be able to ask what to do when you’re bored because you won’t have any time to be bored!
