My Favourite Best Healthy Smoothie Recipes

My favourites of the best healthy smoothie recipes are ones that don’t includebananas, grapes, apples and carrots for making my favourite smoothie recipes anything other than the pure fruit and vegetables, seeds or other healthy additions – but no milk or yoghurt or commercially prepared ingredients. And definitely no sweeteners, not even honey.

If you also enjoy the natural flavour of fruit and veg, you’ll soon be flying high with your smoothie creations because you can mix almost anything!

There are no actual ‘rules’ to smoothie making but you may like to be guided by colour to keep it looking vibrant. I don’t mind smudging the colours personally!

Which Blender Should I Use?

Update: I have now had my Braun for a year and although it does the job, I am not happy with it. The Braun works fine for smoothies I guess, but it’s not versatile at all. It isn’t useful for blending thicker substances and if you do, there’s loads of waste at the bottom of the jug where you just can’t get the mixture out. For cleaning, the braun gets a very low rating from me too. It has bumps running down the side of the jug which just serve to trap more mixture = more waste & worse for cleaning.

Previous opinion:

I have to confess that I haven’t joined the NUTRiBULLET Movement. The NutriBullet is undeniably the most powerful machine for blending all the vegetable or fruit skins into a smooth drink, but personally I prefer to make large quantities and I don’t actually mind if there are a few bits in it, as long as they’re small. And it should be able to crush ice without a problem.

So after much deliberating I chose to buy a Braun Jug blender ….and I don’tregret it for a minute.

I always make a large quantity, and in the summer I’m going to fill the fridge with yummy gazpacho or other chilled soups. So the small NutriBullet just wouldn’t be practical for me. And if you go up a category to the Vitamix, which is bigger, well then to be honest I just think it’s too expensive.

So there, it’s out, I’ve made a very unfashionable choice! But I love my Braun and my smoothies!!!

Whatever the smoothie recipe, you can add ingredients to make your smoothie healthier and/or to balance your specific needs or deficiencies.

Consider these things for adding to your smoothies.

  • 1-2 tbsp flax seeds – great source of omega 3
  • Nuts – add a handful of nuts for a protein boost
  • 1-2 cm cube ginger (or more, to taste) – adds a delicious kick to the flavour and is also known for its many health benefits. Ginger is my favourite so I add it to most of mine.
  • 1/4 – 1/2 tsp turmeric – recognised above all for its anti-inflammatory powers and general health boost. It gives a slightly sour taste which I love.
  • Coconut oil – for an addition of healthy fat – I haven’t tried adding coconut oil yet.

My Favourite Best Healthy Smoothie Recipes

These recipes are my favourites so they’re not meant to be a full cover of all the possibilities. There are some fruits that I just prefer not to put in my smoothies.

Mango’s an absent ingredient here – that’s simply because I love mango soooo much I can’t allow it to go into my smoothie…I just have to eat it! And as for strawberries, well I don’t really like them so you won’t find them in my recipes. In fact, berry smoothies aren’t really my thing either.

Lemon, carrot, tomato, beetroot and green smoothies

So here are some of the ones I love….

All the recipes below make a good 4 glasses of smoothie: just add the fruit and vegetables to the blender in small chunks, starting off with the harder veg with a little water and gradually adding more ingredients. Well, that’s according the blender instructions but I confess, I throw everything in, flip the switch, wait a few moments and it’s done!

To all of the recipes below, add water, 2 large ice cubes and any of the healthy additions to the blender. I almost always add chia seeds to my smoothies.
